The Actual Difference Between Web 3.0 and Metaverse

The internet has fundamentally reshaped the course of human history for about four decades now. And it continues to evolve each day. The internet has revolutionized communications to such an extent that we increasingly use it every day for nearly everything. One of the simplest examples of Internet advancement is that people no longer spend hours staring at computer screens; instead, they use their mobile phones while on the go to stay connected. In the brief history of the internet, the creation of Web 2.0 in the first decade of the 21st century created its own revolution. However, two new terms have intrigued people and promise a whole new world of modern-day internet in today's time. We call them Web 3.0 and Metaverse. Before you read further, it's important to know that both of these concepts are not alike. The purpose of this article is to clarify the difference between Web 3.0 and Metaverse, and the ways in which each has been recognized.

It would be unfair to say that neither concept has been fully developed. Web 3.0 is considered the internet of the future, and the Metaverse is how the internet might seamlessly integrate into our daily lives.

What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0, also called Web3, is a third generation of the internet that provides a faster, easier, and more efficiently personalized user experience by connecting decentralized data through the internet. It uses blockchain, cryptocurrency, non-fungible tokens, and other technologies to create platforms built on edge computing concepts and artificial intelligence. The term Web 3.0 was coined in 2014 by Gavin Wood, Ethereum's co-founder, though John Markoff of the New York Times is also credited for coining the term back in 2006. As envisioned by many, Web 3.0 would provide complete privacy and decentralization far from the tech giants and simplify scalability and data security. This new paradigm of open, trustless, and permission less networks will eventually provide the capability of coordinating and incentivizing the long tail of companies, organizations, individuals, and data providers that are the disenfranchised backdrop to many of the world's greatest challenges, such as health, finance, etc.

Semantic web technology relies on understanding the context and concept of the data to interpret its meaning. Consequently, web 3.0 delivers to users the most accurate and relevant results when they search for answers. With Web 3.0, users can read, write, and interact with content through apps and websites. Instead of centralized databases for storing application state or a centralized web server that hosts the back end logic, Web 3.0 completely relies on the blockchain, which anonymous nodes maintain.

What is Metaverse?

A metaverse is a network of virtual worlds that utilize augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and blockchain technologies to foster social interaction within a virtual environment. This virtual environment simulates a digital environment setting and offers a wide range of entertainment and projects that are based on the real world. Metaverse proponents predict humans will be able to navigate virtual worlds as digital avatars in the near future. To understand Metaverse in simpler terms, let's take the example of online shopping. In an alternative to 2D applications on a mobile device or browsing the web by flipping through pages, Metaverse allows users to interact with websites as in-game characters or avatars, such as shopping in a 3D mall or exploring a 3D building. A virtual building will allow users to seamlessly interact in 3-dimensions and immerse themselves in the virtual world. In addition, users will be able to walk or virtually teleport from one "website" to another.

So, in essence, the Metaverse concept would be a more interactive and immersive internet where users can navigate from one virtual world to another. Compared to Web 3.0, Metaverse fulfills its needs by utilizing Web 3.0 innovations.

Web 3.0 vs Metaverse

You can clearly differentiate Web 3.0 from Metaverse by their existing definitions. Apart from these technological definitions, the basic difference between both Web 3.0 and Metaverse is that Web 3.0 is the technology that allows online activities to be conducted on it. Alternatively, Metaverse describes a futuristic era in which humans can enter the digital periphery through computer-assisted technology.

It is crucial to understand that the vital component of Web 3.0 and metaverse comparisons is the underlying technology. Apart from virtual and augmented reality, connectivity, interfaces, decentralization, experiences, and supporting technology form the core of the metaverse ecosystem.

The web will not change, even though it's version 3.0. It is still a location that will continue to be virtual. A Web 3.0 could also look like today's internet, only with computers and smartphones rather than VR headsets. Web 3.0 intends to create a decentralized web-based only on blockchain and cryptocurrency.

Metaverse technology still needs to be accessible for it to become a reality, which will be made available only when more tech companies contribute towards it. It will require a completely new web infrastructure and components. It is equally required to build extremely sustainable and powerful computer systems to handle the comprehensive concept of Metaverse. As of now, companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Snapchat have attempted to create the Metaverse.

Among the other major differences between web 3.0 and Metaverse would be its possible applications. As you read earlier, Metaverses are new dimensions combining entertainment, gaming, education, simulation-based training, and social networks. All of these metaverse applications are, on the other hand, still being developed. On the other hand, web 3.0 specifies the upcoming version of the internet. Because it applies to the whole internet as a set of standards rather than just specialized apps, web 3.0 affirms to benefit everyone rather than just a small minority of people.


While we're seeing glimpses of both Web 3.0 and Metaverse, there is a common perspective that claims that neither is likely to change the status quo of today's internet. On the other hand, it's also true that if these technologies come into existence, they are sure to benefit industries beyond gaming and entertainment. Despite the fundamental differences between Web 3.0 and Metaverse, both can grow and develop into even greater things, and that's why there's so much interest in how the two can bring in new technological advances through their interaction.
